Milestone Review

We are approaching Milestone prep time. HERE you will find the 5th grade study guide to help your student prepare for all 5 academic test. You can also visit the Georgia Department of Education End of Grade Resource Center HERE. 

This week in Mrs. Plante's Math....

This week we will focus of classifying 2-D shapes. Here you will find the parent letter from the GADOE explaining our standards and what your student will be learning. UNIT TEST THURSDAY 2/13/2020.

Standards: MGSE5.G.3  Understand that attributes belonging to a category of two-dimensional figures also belong to all subcategories of that category.  For example, all rectangles have four right angles and squares are rectangles, so all squares have four right angles.

MGSE5.G.4  Classify two-dimensional figures in a hierarchy based on properties. (Image below)

Reminder, on Tuesday-Thursday from 7:20-8:00 am the students can come to my room and reassess any math standard they received a 1 or 2 on via Quizizz. Please review their report card with them, so they know what standards they need to reassess.

This week in Mrs. Allen's Class....

This week in writing we started "A Single Shard" an interactive read-aloud. We will have a daily writing prompt that relates to our daily reading.

In Science:

We are studying Types of Magnets/Electricity and Conductors/Insulators

S5P3 Obtain, evaluate, and communicate information about magnetism and its relationship to electricity. 
a. Construct an argument based obj experimental evidence to communicate the differences in function  and purpose of an electromagnet and a magnet. b. Plan and carry out an investigation  to observe the interaction between a magnetic filed and magnetic object.

S5P2 Obtain, evaluate, and communicate information to investigate electricity.
a. Obtain and combine information from multiple sources to explain the differences between naturally occurring electricity (static) and human harnessed electricity. b. Design and complete, simple electric circuit, and explain all necessary components. c. Plan and carry out investigations on common materials to determine if they are insulators or conductors of electricity.

Words to know:
Bar magnet: a magnet that is shaped like a bar.
Electromagnet: a magnet that can be turned on or off, the magnetic field is produced by electrical current.
Temporary: something that last only for a short period of time.
Evidence: Information that supports an idea 
Conductor: material the allows electric current flow through it easily 
Insulator: material that stops current from flowing 
Electric circuit: pathway in which electrical current flows 
Closed Circuit: pathway that allows electrical current to flow freely
Open circuit: pathway that prevents electric current from flowing freely or stops the current 

Test will be February 14th. 

On Monday's students will have an opportunity to work on concepts they received a 1 on to help review for the milestone. This is done via Quizzes.

This week in Mr. Brumbelow's Class....

We will finish reading our newest nonfiction text, How Does a Waterfall Become Electricity by Robert Snedden and moving on to our next nonfiction text, Ice to Steam by Penny Johnson. Our spelling words are listed below. We will not be having a vocabulary test over these words, but it would certainly help each student's comprehension if they were familiar with these words. They will receive a paper copy of these words on Monday. 

We will also continue our NBI groups, System 44, and Read 180. For the students that remain in my classroom during this segment, we will be transitioning back to a fiction text for this NBI cycle.
